Major Problem
I left VG a few months ago because of the major lag which made playing stressful. I returned to check if any improvement was made (not much). With the exception of the monumental lag, everything worked fine before I left. However now, along with the lag, another major problem (worse than the lag). The UI windows all eventually, although some gradually, turn totally black. When I open the main menu, it turns black and the font is broken and as I pass my mouse over it, it disappears altogether and the tabs are blank. It's not just one ui, but all, even the default. I have no idea what is going on or how to fix it, if, it's even fixable. Any help would be very much appreciated. I play other games with no problems at all (EQ, EQ2 just to name a couple).

its is probably the wonderful memory leaks in VG, usualy a /flush command fixes this for me.

Well, tried /flush and it worked for bout minute, then same thing happened with all the black windows and disappearing font. Really can't play with this happening but thanks again for trying to help.

Try deleting your cache folder in the VG folder and running the game again.
If that doesn't help, I'd guess it's an issue with a video driver... VG just might not like the version you have. Maybe try going up or down a revision or two (this is especially common with Nvidia drivers - they will work great for all the other games you play just not VG due to a minor change in a driver file).
Might also check to make sure you have the latest directx (apr09?).
My last idea would be to try the tweaks found at http://forums.station.sony.com/vg/po...topic_id=10869
The unfortunate thing about VG is that since the base code is so old now, it tends to be very picky about your computer. It can take jumping through some hoops but I find the game worth the exercise =)

Thanks, Aalwein. Tried your suggestions, but the problem is still there, maybe a bit better but the hot box still shows black slots instead of the icons. A shame too because the lag problem has definitely improved. Not sure what to try next.

And this is on a fresh install of Vanguard, or are you running a copy that you never uninstalled from your first stint in VG? Last thing I can thing of is to entirely delete the game and reinstall... but with everything we've tried you'd think something would have worked.
I guess last ditch, try a complete uninstall/reinstall and if you still have problems maybe SOE tech support has something else to offer. At this point someone really doesn't want you to play the game, lol!

Hmm...maybe I'll try the uninstall/install. Nothing else has worked so shouldn't hurt anything. Last resort might be tech support but not very optomistic that they could help. Perhaps you're right, I'm just not meant to play. Glad I have Eq and Eq2 to fall back on. They're actually very good games too (or even LoTR). Thanks a lot for your help, Aalwein.

Finally, problem solved! Turned out to be my "updated" nvidia drivers. I had to roll back to drivers in Dec., 2008. Everything working fine now, even had courage to try DroxyCore ui and it works very well. Thanks to all who tried to help. Was much appreciated.

Glad to hear you got it worked out; we need all the players we can get in Vanguard! I hope you enjoy DroxyCore - if you have any issues or requests pop over to the official discussion thread.
